Mijn inspiratie

Mijn fascinatie ligt bij het blootleggen van de interactie netwerken tussen de pre-coloniale bewoners, de indianen, van de verschillende eilanden in het Caraibisch gebied. Die interactie is goed meetbaar aan de hand van de mobiliteit van mensen, en de uitwisseling van goederen en ideeën. Ik richt mij met name op de periode 6000 v. chr. tot 1492, wanneer de Spanjaarden het Caraibisch gebied veroveren. Naast traditioneel onderzoek naar potscherven en begravingrituelen wordt een keur aan andere methodes (isotopen onderzoek, oud-DNA, bioarcheologie, etnohistorie en ethnografie) ingezet om deze uitwisseling inzichtelijk te maken en een heel precies beeld te verschaffen van het leven van de oorspronkelijke bewoners van dit gebied. Het werken met een internationale en multi-disciplinaire onderzoeksgroep vind ik zeer inspirerend en is de beste weg naar een beter begrip van een periode uit de geschiedenis die besloten ligt in een kwetsbaar bodemarchief.
